Police station attack nine jailed

SEVEN men were jailed for five years yesterday for launching a firebomb assault on a police station in Hamad Town.

Another two were handed three-year sentences by the High Criminal Court.

However, none of the defendants appeared in court and rumours circulating online claimed five had escaped from custody as they were being transported to the court from the Dry Dock Detention Centre.

The Interior Ministry would neither confirm nor deny the reports when contacted by the GDN yesterday.

All nine were convicted of possessing Molotov cocktails, arson and attacking the police station on February 7 last year.

A detective who earlier took to the stand told judges that a 19-year-old defendant was arrested after he bragged about the attack.

According to court documents, the teenager confessed to planning the assault with his friends during questioning.

However, his lawyer argued it was impossible to know who was behind the incident because the attackers were masked.
