 Hunt starts for May Queen

Women of all nationalities are being invited to take part in the search for the May Queen 2008 at the Indian Club, Manama. Prospective candidates must be aged between 15 and 28 and have good moral standing.

In the past, women from India, Pakistan, Bahrain, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Russia and the UK have taken part in the beauty contest.

The last date for registration is May 10 and the fee is BD2.

The coronation night will be May 29 during the Indian Club May Queen Ball 2008.

"The Indian Club's May Queen is one of the most prestigious events in Bahrain," said secretary-general Ulhas Karnavar.

"It has been held regularly for the past three decades and has become one of the biggest contests in the kingdom.

"It has also become the most cherished activity of the Indian Club by its members, guests, sponsors, supporters and contestants alike.

"Audience will include envoys of various countries, including Indian Ambassador Balkrishna Shetty, members of the Indian community and other nationalities."

This year, the club's executive committee, headed by president Mohan Josiah, has decided to introduce a series of events starting from the May Queen Ball 2008.

All contestants will go through a "grooming session", to be conducted by show choreographer Shamima Noorani.

The contest will consist of three rounds on the catwalk.

An array of prizes will be presented to the winner.

There will also be prizes for the first and second runners-up, as well as the winners of the Best Smile, Best Hairdo and Best Model.

The unveiling of the May Queen logo was held earlier this month at the club's Sanskar Hall, Manama, by Mr Shetty.

"The May Queen provides an excellent opportunity for business houses to advertise their products and services," said Mr Karnavar.
